Staff Council at the Bird House

For the second year, members and alumni of the University Staff Council volunteered to decorate The Bird House for the holiday season. This lovely home opened its doors to those in need of hospice care in April of 2016. The home accommodates up to five “guests,” and provides a comfortable place where guests and their families can feel like they’re at home. As the seasons change, decorations in the home need to change, and that’s where volunteer groups can make a difference. The volunteers from Staff Council put up a Christmas tree in the living room, strung the lights, added ornaments, and perched an angel on top. One councilor even brought homemade snowflakes to add a personal, artistic touch. Volunteers added garland and lights to the fireplace mantel, on which several different kinds of bird statuettes perch, and they wound garland around the porch railing outside. It was a fun and rewarding time in service to others. If you’d like to be a part of a group that reaches out to the community and serves your fellow employees of the University of Iowa, consider running for Staff Council.
