The “Celebration of Excellence and Achievement among Women”, the University’s annual tribute to the accomplishments of all women at UI, recognizes outstanding scholarship, research, service, leadership and activism among undergraduate, graduate, staff and faculty women. 

There are three “Celebration of Excellence and Achievement among Women” awards for which faculty/staff are eligible.  They are May Brodbeck Distinguished Achievement Award for Faculty, the Susan C. Buckley Distinguished Achievement Award for Staff, and the Jean Y. Jew Women’s Rights Award.  Award winners will be honored at our in-person event on Wednesday, April 5th, 2023 at the IMU 2nd Floor Ballroom.

The nomination deadline for Distinguished Achievement Awards is January 6, 2023, and the nomination deadline for Jean Y. Jew Women’s Rights Award is February 13, 2023. 

  • May Brodbeck Distinguished Achievement Award for Faculty
    • Eligibility: Female faculty who are employed at the University of Iowa in a regular position (50% and more capacity) between previous year (February 4, 2022, Friday) and this year’s nomination deadline (January 6, 2023, Friday). Award winners from previous years are ineligible.
    • Criteria:
      • Candidates should have significant years of service and/or significant contribution/impact within the University community.
      • Candidates should demonstrate scholarly contributions such as achievement in original/creative findings, publication, research, presentation, and/or impact on engaging and generating valuable insight in classrooms and labs; and/or their administrative services to the unit, department, college or division, profession, or community. They should perform a level above their job duties. Please note that such contributions need not be as an executive or administrator but may be demonstrated at any level of employment.
      • Candidates should serve as role model and/or mentor of women/girls, and/or future women scholars and/or leaders.
  • Susan C. Buckley Distinguished Achievement Award for Staff
    • Eligibility: Female staff who are employed at the University of Iowa in a regular position (50% and more capacity) between previous year (February 4, 2022, Friday) and this year’s nomination deadline (January 6, 2023, Friday). Award winners from previous years are ineligible.
    • Criteria:
      • Candidates should have significant years of service and/or significant contribution/impact within the University community.
      • Candidates should demonstrate achievement and performance through attributes such as leadership, innovation, subject matter expertise, or excellence customer services and collaborations, and/or their administrative services to the unit, department, college or division, profession, or community. They should perform a level above their job duties. Please note that such contributions need not be as an executive or administrator but may be demonstrated at any level of employment.
      • Candidates should serve as role model and/or mentor of women/girls, and/or future women scholars and/or leaders.
  • The Jean Y. Jew Women’s Rights Award (faculty, staff, or student)
    • Criteria
      • Candidates should have a strong record of support for women's rights in a broad sense, a commitment to women's rights at The University of Iowa, and one or more of the following related to women's rights:
        • Particular contributions to The University of Iowa
        •  Long-standing record of leadership, effort, and activism
        • Accomplishments with national scope or impact
