Iowa City Foreign Relations Council is a free, local resource for international programs and community engagement

The Iowa City Foreign Relations Council (ICFRC) is a non-profit organization based in Iowa City that promotes understanding and awareness of international affairs. The Council achieves its mission through various activities, including hosting lectures, forums, and discussions on issues affecting our global and local communities.
ICFRC provides educators and community members a platform to access expert insights and information on international affairs. Lectures and discussions organized by the Council can serve as valuable educational opportunities, helping individuals stay informed about global events, trends, and challenges while gaining a broader understanding of international perspectives in an increasingly interconnected world.
Since 1983, ICFRC has hosted speakers with diverse viewpoints on international issues, fostering a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of global affairs while facilitating community engagement by bringing people together to discuss and learn about international issues. This engagement can lead to a more informed and connected community aware of the challenges and opportunities in the global landscape.
Bi-monthly events are always free and often cover topics related to cultural exchange, fostering mutual understanding and appreciation among community members for the diverse cultures and societies worldwide. Participation also provides networking opportunities with individuals interested in international affairs. This networking can lead to collaborations, partnerships, and the exchange of ideas, benefiting educators and community members.
For students and community members, citizen involvement in global issues is a form of citizen diplomacy. By participating in the activities organized by ICFRC, community members can contribute to promoting mutual understanding and cooperation between peoples, cultures, and countries. For faculty and staff, involvement can contribute to their professional development. Exposure to international experts and topics can enhance their knowledge, allowing them to bring a global perspective into their classrooms and interactions with students and others.
Consider joining an ICFRC event in the spring, providing opportunities for students to participate, or becoming or recommending an impactful speaker. Please visit our events calendar or complete this UI Faculty and Staff Survey to learn more.
