Any idea who represents you on Staff Council? The feedback we’ve received suggests that many University staff members would answer “no.” The Councilor Spotlight series is intended to introduce new Council members and how they serve the University on Staff Council. Why would you want to contact your representative? They can elevate your concerns or ideas, help you find information, and connect you with resources across campus. Mel Sanders is the Assistant Athletic Director for Advising & Eligibility, serving student athletes and coaches. He represents the University function of Athletics on Staff Council. Mel has been part of the University for more than 17 years and has become an involved Staff Council member by serving on the Community Outreach Committee.
When asked what Mel hopes to learn or achieve while serving on Staff Council, he responded, “I hope to help with anything that can improve the quality of life.”

Q: What inspires you?
A: People who put others before themselves. 
Q: What is something you do outside of work for fun? 
A: Watch my kids play sports.
Q: What is your favorite local spot or attraction?
A: Whenever I can get two seats at Red’s!
Q: What would constitute a "perfect" day for you?
A: Hawkeye victory over a traditional rival on a beautiful day with no traffic going home.
Q: If you could choose one song to play every time you walked into a room, what would you choose and why?
A: “Macho Man” or “San Francisco” by the Village People because it will be time to get the “party” started! (and by “party” I mean work!).
Q: If you could have any superhero power, what would it be and why?
A: Take away everyone’s physical or emotional pain.
