Filipino American Hisotry month 2023.jpg

October is Filipino American History month

This celebrates the culture and the contributions made by this group, to the US. The Philippines, is a country comprised of over 7000 islands in southeast Asia. The relationship between the US and the Philippines is a long one. It dates as far back as 1587, when Filipinos, then referred to as “Luzones Indios” landed on US soil as part of the Spanish galleon. Later, the US started military rule in the Philippines after the Spanish- American war. Although the Philippines gained independence from the US on July 4, 1946, this has not slowed down the cultural exchange and rich partnership between the two countries.

In the field of entertainment alone, there are many notable persons of Filipino ancestry including: Bruno Mars, Olivia Rodrigo, Jo Koy, Vanessa Hudgens and Dave Bautista. In fact, among Asian Americans, Filipino Americans are the second largest group in the US. To honor this relationship, in 2009 the US congress declared October to be Filipino American History month. Every October, various Filipino organizations ramp up their efforts to celebrate and promote Filipino-American culture, achievements and engage with other communities in the US. Join us in extending greetings to everyone celebrating Filipino awareness month, as it is such diversity that makes the fabric of US society so beautiful.
