Staff Council Spotlight: Tom Hicks
Org Rep, College of Education

Meet Tom Hicks, Student Support Coordinator in the College of Education, who brings advocacy, connection, and a love for cycling to his role on Staff Council. With 2.5 years of experience at the University, Tom has become a dedicated resource for students and colleagues alike, known for his commitment to helping others grow and succeed.

As an Organizational Representative on Staff Council, Tom serves on the Education and University Relations Committees. His goal? To advocate for colleagues and build meaningful connections across the University. Tom believes that collaboration and compassion are key to creating a positive campus environment.

Outside of work, Tom enjoys cycling and attending live music events. His favorite local spot is the Sac & Fox Trail in Cedar Rapids—a perfect place to recharge and enjoy the outdoors. When asked what inspires him, Tom says it’s “seeing our students figure out solutions to their problems and grow as humans.” If he could choose a superhero power, it would be the ability to spread kindness and compassion everywhere.

Tom shared this photo from a family trip to Colorado Springs. He, his wife, and daughter visited family in Denver this past summer and spent a couple of days exploring. On their first day, they took a bus to the top of Pikes Peak to enjoy the stunning views and try the famous donuts. It was a beautiful day—and lucky timing, because just 24 hours later, the peak had a few inches of snow and was closed for a few hours!
