Since 1967, Staff Council has had a strong history of shared governance at the University of Iowa. Staff come together, committed to the values of this organization, to create an outlet where their peers to be seen and heard. Staff councilors advocate on behalf of their colleagues and bring their ideas and concerns to leadership with an aim toward collaboration and continuous improvement. With these ideals in mind, we recognize our 2005–2006 past president, Michelle Wichman, who recently passed away.
Michelle was a lifelong learner deeply committed to the University of Iowa. She earned undergraduate degrees in Biology, Mathematics, and Computer Science before completing a Master of Science in Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health (Biostatistics) and an Executive MBA. Her academic and professional experiences gave her a clear understanding of the challenges research staff faced, including job protection, employment consistency, and access to ongoing skill development. As president, Michelle focused her efforts on helping to create a strong and supportive working environment for those in research roles.
Past President Mary Greer, who preceded Michelle, shared, “Michelle did a great job educating me and others on the differences in job classifications. We had many challenges during her presidency as councilors, and she led us with grace and determination.”
Past staff councilor Kathy Klein Gerling shared, “Michelle was one of the most amazing and compassionate leaders to ever serve as Staff Council president. Her nature and her dedication to being the best president she could be left me awe-struck. She cared about all the constituents she served and sought to address each and every one of them. Michelle’s dedication knew no bounds, and her friendship was a cherished blessing.”
Past president and Chief HR Officer Cheryl Reardon shared, “Michelle was a leader who cared about staff on campus. She was service-oriented in her approach and was an excellent communicator. She was passionate about her work and is forever a Hawkeye.”
We are deeply grateful for Michelle’s effort and dedication to improving the lives of staff at the University of Iowa. Her work was foundational to the mission of Staff Council, and her legacy continues to live on. We are a stronger organization today because of the time, energy, and care she devoted to her peers and to this community.
