Meet Jon Scanlan, Senior IT Support Consultant in Systems Support for HCIS, who brings a passion for communication, collaboration, and continuous improvement to his role on Staff Council.

Jon joined the University of Iowa Healthcare in September 2024. This year, he represents staff as a Function Representative for Information Technology (PI) on Staff Council. He contributes his time and perspective as a member of both the University Relations Committee and the Healthcare Committee, where he works to ensure staff voices are heard and shared effectively.

For Jon, serving on Staff Council is about connection and communication. He hopes to act as a bridge between leadership and staff, supporting both bottom-up and top-down dialogue. Jon also sees his role as an opportunity to represent the University’s core values while growing personally and professionally alongside fellow Council members.

Outside of work, Jon enjoys making and performing music. He has played trombone for 13 years and piano for 11, and he spends much of his free time writing and playing music. Some of his favorite pieces to play include The Chicken by Pee Wee Ellis, Wind Machine by Count Basie, Monk’s Dream by Thelonious Monk, and Spain by Chick Corea.

When asked what inspires him, Jon points to seeing others actively work toward their goals and strive to become better than they were before—a mindset that motivates him to keep pushing forward while helping make the path easier for those who follow.

If Jon could have any superhero power, it would be the ability to create independent copies of himself—allowing him to multitask, gain new skills, and bring those experiences back into his everyday work.
