Any idea who represents you on Staff Council? The feedback we’ve received suggests that many University staff members would answer “no.” The Councilor Spotlight series is intended to introduce new Council members and how they serve the University on Staff Council. Why would you want to contact your representative? They can elevate your concerns or ideas, help you find information, and connect you with resources across campus. Meet Kate Woods, Business Administrator for the School of Library and Information Science, who brings extensive experience and a strong commitment to connection and advocacy to her role on Staff Council.

Kate has been part of the University of Iowa community for over 20 years, serving a wide range of individuals in her role—including program faculty, staff, administrators, students, and Graduate College leadership. Her long-standing service reflects a deep understanding of the university and a dedication to supporting those she works with.

Kate currently serves as an Organizational Representative for the Graduate College on Staff Council and is an active member of the Human Resources Committee. Through her work on Staff Council, she hopes to expand her network across campus, build meaningful relationships, and strengthen her ability to advocate for her constituents. Drawing from her experience, Kate believes there is tremendous value in connections—“who you know” can be just as important as “what you know.”

Outside of work, Kate enjoys spending time outdoors, especially kayaking, which has quickly become her favorite hobby after finding a used kayak at a neighborhood garage sale. When it comes to local attractions, she highly recommends the New Strand movie theater in West Liberty, a charming, community-owned theater known for its welcoming atmosphere, great value, and unbeatable popcorn (with free refills!).

If Kate could have a song play every time she walked into a room, it would be “Afterlife” by Ingrid Michaelson—an uplifting tune with a fun beat that matches her positive outlook. As for a superpower, she would choose the ability to fall into a restful sleep or feel fully energized on demand, a practical and relatable wish for maintaining balance in a busy world.
