Learn how the University of Iowa Staff Council helps represent, connect, and advocate for staff across campus.
Founded in 1967, the UISC serves as the representative voice for University of Iowa staff who are not represented by an exclusive bargaining agent, including Professional and Scientific staff and Merit staff. As part of the university’s shared governance structure, UISC works closely with the Office of the President, Human Resources, and other shared governance groups to elevate staff perspectives, share timely information, and support meaningful participation in decisions that affect the university community.
The Council is made up of 60 elected members, with representation based on both job function and organizational unit:
40 Function Representatives, who represent staff by Job Function or combined Job Function categories; and
20 Organizational Representatives, who represent staff by Organizational Unit or combined Organizational Unit categories.
Council members are led by the UISC president, who is elected to a one-year term beginning in July. Each president brings a distinct perspective and set of priorities to the role. Sam Mitchell currently serves as Staff Council President, with Ashley Peters serving as Vice President/President-Elect and Neda Barrett as Past President.
Staff are central to the success of the University of Iowa, and UISC works to support and amplify their contributions by:
Representing staff at campus and community events
Sharing staff perspectives with university leaders and across the state, including at the State House
Contributing volunteer time to university and community initiatives
Celebrating and encouraging staff recognition
Advocating for policies and practices that support staff
Promoting professional development and other opportunities for staff growth
